Orthotics are medical devices that are worn with shoes to correct and stabilize the feet and ankles. An orthotic will position the foot in what is called a “neutral position”, so that the foot will be functioning from its most stable position. By doing this, the orthotic is able to improve the function of the feet and limit the stress and strain on certain joints and/or tendons/ligaments/muscles. Often orthotics are discussed like eyeglasses, in the sense that eyeglasses correct vision when worn, just as orthotics correct foot position when worn. Orthotics are most often used to stabilize a flatfoot, treat plantar fasciitis, manage tendonitis or slow down the progression of a bunion.
